The actives and the oils
Vitamin E is a family of fat-soluble antioxidants called tocopherols. Tocopheryl acetate is the stable ester form most skincare uses; skin converts some of it to free vitamin E.
It protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and adds antioxidant and conditioning benefits for the skin. That double job is why it is on most of our lists.
