What we count as fragrance: “Fragrance (Parfum)”, “Aroma (Flavor)”, essential oils such as lavender, and scented flower waters such as rose water. Plant extracts such as chamomile or calendula aren’t fragrance, and some of these pieces contain them. One more to know: benzyl alcohol, the preservative in La Rosée and Le Peptide, is also on the EU’s list of labelled fragrance allergens. It is there to preserve, not to scent, but if you know you react to it, those two aren’t for you. Which pieces contain benzyl alcohol.

Questions
What does fragrance-free mean?
That nothing was added to give the product a scent. On a list, that means no “fragrance” or “parfum”, and for us also no flavouring, essential oil or scented flower water. The product can still smell faintly of its other ingredients.
Is unscented the same as fragrance-free?
Not always. An “unscented” product can contain a masking fragrance that hides the smell of its other ingredients. We only call a piece fragrance-free when nothing scented is on its list.
Are essential oils a fragrance?
Yes. Lavender, citrus and other essential oils are added for scent, and they can irritate sensitive skin just as a synthetic fragrance can. We count them.
