What is a formaldehyde releaser?
A preservative that slowly gives off tiny amounts of formaldehyde, which keeps a product free of bacteria and mould. Diazolidinyl urea and DMDM hydantoin are two common ones.
Should I avoid formaldehyde releasers?
If you are allergic to formaldehyde, or a patch test has flagged one of these preservatives, yes. Most people use them without problems; they are permitted at low levels in the EU and the US.
Is phenoxyethanol a formaldehyde releaser?
No. Phenoxyethanol is a different preservative and doesn’t release formaldehyde.
