We searched every ingredient list we publish for drying alcohols, the kind that evaporates and can leave skin tight, and found none. That makes 40 pieces. Some lists do use the word “alcohol” for something else: fatty alcohols that soften, and a preservative.
What we count: alcohol (ethanol), alcohol denat., SD alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. What we don’t: fatty alcohols such as cetyl and stearyl alcohol, which are waxy softeners, and benzyl alcohol, a preservative used in small amounts. About cetyl alcohol.

Questions
Is cetyl alcohol a drying alcohol?
No. Cetyl and stearyl alcohol are fatty alcohols: waxy ingredients, usually from plant oils, that soften skin and thicken a cream. They share the word, not the effect.
Is benzyl alcohol drying?
Not at the small amounts used to preserve a formula. It is worth knowing about for a different reason: it is also an EU-labelled fragrance allergen.
Why avoid alcohol in skincare?
High amounts of ethanol evaporate quickly and can leave dry or sensitive skin tight and irritated. In small amounts in a well-made formula it is usually fine, but many people with dry skin prefer to go without.
