Each ingredient is matched against the 128 ingredients in our ingredient glossary, each with a vegan verdict, plus a short list of animal-derived ingredients no Divina piece contains, such as keratin, silk, shellac and guanine. The other checks use the same rules as our collections: fragrance and flavouring, talc, silicones, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, mineral oil, drying alcohol and retinoids. It reads names, not sources: glycerin could come from a plant or an animal, and no list says which, so it is flagged for you to ask about rather than passed.

Look for the animal-derived names: beeswax (cera alba), lanolin and its derivatives, carmine (CI 75470), honey (mel), collagen, keratin, silk, shellac and guanine. Some, such as glycerin, stearic acid or lecithin, can come from plants or animals, and a list never says which; for those, ask the brand.
