What we count as a silicone: anything ending in -methicone or -siloxane (dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, phenyl trimethicone) and their relatives, such as polymethylsilsesquioxane and siloxysilicates. Silica isn’t a silicone: it is a mineral, silicon dioxide, and it appears on some of these lists.

Why choose silicone-free?
Most people choose it for environmental reasons, since some silicones persist in the environment, or because they don’t like the slippery feel. Silicones themselves are considered safe on skin.
Is silica a silicone?
No. Silica is a mineral, silicon dioxide. Silicones are synthetic polymers made from silicon, and they end in -methicone or -siloxane on a list.
Do silicones clog pores?
They aren’t generally considered pore-clogging, and dimethicone is common in products made for breakout-prone skin. If you break out, the whole formula matters more than one ingredient.
