Lanolin is the wax-like grease that sheep produce to waterproof their wool. It is washed out of shorn wool and refined. Its derivatives, such as acetylated lanolin alcohol and isopropyl lanolate, are made from it.

Why it’s in a formula
It is a deeply softening emollient that holds on to moisture, which is why it gives concealers their cushion and glosses their comfort, and why eye creams use it.
- It is not vegan: it comes from an animal, even though the sheep aren’t harmed to collect it.
- Look for every form of the name. On our lists it appears as lanolin, acetylated lanolin alcohol and isopropyl lanolate.
- It is a known, if uncommon, cause of contact allergy. If you react to wool grease, check the list.

Is lanolin vegan?
No. It comes from sheep’s wool. Collecting it doesn’t kill the sheep, but it is still an animal product.
Is lanolin vegetarian?
By most definitions, yes: it is the grease washed from sheared wool, and no animal is killed for it. It is still not vegan.
Is lanolin cruelty-free?
Cruelty-free and vegan answer different questions. Cruelty-free means the product was not tested on animals; vegan means nothing in it comes from an animal. Every Divina piece is cruelty-free, and the ones that list lanolin say on their own pages that they aren’t vegan.
Is acetylated lanolin alcohol vegan?
No. It is made from lanolin, so it carries the same animal origin.
Does lanolin clog pores?
It can feel heavy on oily or breakout-prone skin, and some people find it congesting. On lips and around the eyes it is usually well tolerated.
