Beeswax
Beeswax is the wax honeybees secrete to build their comb. On an ingredient list it appears as Cera Alba, usually followed by “(Beeswax)”.

Why it’s in a formula
It gives a lipstick its structure and glide, lets a mascara hold a curl, and forms a soft, protective film in a rich cream. Few waxes do all three as easily, which is why it turns up in so many formulas.
- It is not vegan. Many vegetarians use it; most vegans avoid it.
- “Synthetic Beeswax” is different: a lab-made blend of fatty esters built to behave like beeswax, with no bees involved. Le Rouge uses it.
- Candelilla and carnauba are the plant waxes that most often stand in for it.

Is beeswax vegan?
No. It is made by bees, so vegans avoid it. Many vegetarians are fine with it.
Is synthetic beeswax vegan?
Yes, by its name and make-up: it is a mixture of lab-made fatty esters designed to mimic beeswax. It contains no beeswax.
