Retinyl Palmitate
Retinyl palmitate is vitamin A (retinol) joined to palmitic acid, a fatty acid. It belongs to the retinoid family, but it is the gentlest member: skin has to convert it in several steps before it acts, so much less of it arrives in active form.

Why it’s in a formula
In a cream or lip product it is there as an antioxidant and conditioning ingredient. It is far milder than retinol and much less likely to cause the dryness or peeling retinol can.
- Retinoids are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Every Divina piece that contains retinyl palmitate says so in its own FAQ; ask your doctor before using one.
- It is not a substitute for a retinol treatment: the conversion is small, so expect conditioning, not retinol-strength results.

Is retinyl palmitate safe during pregnancy?
Retinoids as a group are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Retinyl palmitate is mild, but please ask your doctor before using a product that contains it.
Is retinyl palmitate the same as retinol?
No. It is an ester of retinol, and skin must convert it before it acts, so it is much gentler and much less potent.
Does retinyl palmitate make skin sun-sensitive?
Far less than retinol or prescription retinoids, but daily sunscreen is sensible with any retinoid.
