Aluminum powder, listed as Aluminum or CI 77000, is the metal ground into fine, bright flakes. In cosmetic glitter it is the thin mirror layer on a plastic film, sealed under a clear resin such as epoxy.

Why it’s in a formula
It gives metallic shades and glitter their mirror-like sparkle.
- It is a permitted cosmetic colourant in the EU and the US.
- Aluminum in makeup is not the aluminum salt in antiperspirant, which is a different compound doing a different job. Minerals such as magnesium aluminum silicate and calcium aluminum borosilicate contain aluminum bound into their structure.

Is aluminum in eyeshadow safe?
Aluminum powder is a permitted cosmetic colourant in the EU and the US, used in small amounts for sparkle. As with any glitter, keep it out of the eyes.
What is cosmetic glitter made of?
