Prostaglandin Analogues
Prostaglandin analogues are lab-made relatives of bimatoprost, a glaucoma medicine whose side effect of longer lashes led to the prescription lash drug Latisse. Many cosmetic lash serums use related compounds, most often isopropyl cloprostenate.

What it is for
They lengthen lashes by acting on the hair cycle, which is why they work noticeably and why they behave like drugs. The side effects reported with this family include redness, itching, darkening of the eyelid skin and, with the eye-drop medicines, darkening of the iris. Reports also describe loss of the fat pad around the eye, which hollows the socket and can make dark circles look deeper.

- Names to look for on a lash serum: isopropyl cloprostenate, dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethylcloprostenolamide, methylamido dihydro noralfaprostal, and anything ending in -prost.
- In February 2026 the European Commission’s scientific committee on consumer safety concluded that these three prostaglandin analogues cannot be considered safe for cosmetic lash and brow products, citing their drug-like activity and missing data on effects in pregnancy. That is scientific advice rather than a ban, and it is why so many serums are being reformulated.
- In the United States the FDA has treated isopropyl cloprostenate as an unapproved drug in cosmetics since a 2011 warning letter to a lash-serum maker.

Do prostaglandin-free lash serums work?
They condition lashes and give a fuller, longer look with steady nightly use, judged at eight to twelve weeks. They are gentler and slower than a prescription prostaglandin, and most of the evidence for the peptides comes from their makers’ own studies, so expect conditioning rather than a drug’s effect.
Is there a lash serum without side effects?
Nothing applied at the lash line can promise that; any product can irritate. What a peptide serum avoids is the particular set that comes with prostaglandin analogues: darkened eyelid skin and, with the eye-drop medicines, a change in iris colour. Apply to the lash line only, keep it out of the eye, and stop if it stings.
Is a prostaglandin a hormone?
Not in the everyday sense. Prostaglandins are hormone-like signalling fats the body makes; the ones in lash serums are lab-made analogues of them. When people look for a lash serum “without hormones”, a prostaglandin-free one is usually what they mean.
Does Le Sérum Cils contain prostaglandins?
No. Its published list has two conditioning peptides, myristoyl pentapeptide-17 and acetyl tetrapeptide-3, and no prostaglandin analogue.
What is isopropyl cloprostenate?
A prostaglandin analogue used in cosmetic lash serums. It is related to the glaucoma drugs that lengthen lashes as a side effect.
Do lash serums cause fat loss around the eyes?
The effect is reported with prostaglandin analogues, not with lash products generally. The fat pad around the eye can thin, which hollows the socket and makes dark circles look deeper; in the glaucoma medicines of the same family it is a recognised effect. A serum whose list contains no prostaglandin analogue does not carry that particular risk — check the list, and ask an eye doctor if you have used one and are worried.

Are prostaglandin lash serums safe?
