A skincare routine fails not because the formulas are wrong but because the ritual is joyless — another task at the end of a tired day. Scent changes that. Light a candle as the first gesture of your evening and you give the routine a cue, a threshold, a small ceremony the body learns to anticipate.
Sandalwood and tobacco are the notes we would choose: warm, grounding, a little nocturnal — the olfactory equivalent of lowering the lights. Whatever you burn, let it become the signal that the day is, at last, over.
There is craft in the burn, too. Trim the wick to a quarter-inch before each lighting, and let the first burn reach the edge so the wax pools evenly — a candle, cared for, lasts longer and burns cleaner.
Scent is the shortest path to memory and to calm. Make it the opening note of your evening, and the rest of the ritual follows almost on its own.
A ritual you look forward to is a ritual you keep. Scent is how you make the looking-forward.
